Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - July 2013

Welcome to my garden in hardiness zone 10 on the south coast of Portugal.

Summer has arrived with a vengeance and after a heat wave, some of my July blooms are having a hard time.

The roses

Pink 'n white roses
The little rose bush I bought at Algoz market at the beginning of May is settling in nicely
  Red rose

Fragrant rose
This rose is starting to bloom again
Yellow patio rose
Surrounded by santolina
I had 2 rose bushes in pots, waiting for an opening in the garden - now I have four! I guess more lawn will have to go!

The lillies

Fragrant lilies
Heady scent for the veranda

Unperturbed by the heat

Lavender close-up
A hub of insect activity
Agapanthus
A blue flower, finally

Bougainvillea
Thriving bougainvillea
Nerum oleander
Peachy oleander still going strong
Variegated oleander
This variegated oleander is looking good
Alyssum and snapdragons
Colourful bed reclaimed from the lawn - a work in progress
I plan to plant two roses bushes in this new bed, as soon as I can take out some more grass.

The side and back patios look much the same as they did in June, so that's it, folks, time to visit May Dreams Gardens where the Bloom Day bloggers all link up.

  1. Beautiful. I hope they survive the heat. It's pretty hot in London, but I imagine hotter there.

    1. 32 degrees is the max. temperature expected here today. I have opened an umbrella over the most heat-sentive rose bush!

  2. I don't envy you taking out the grass. That's hard work. I used to periodically expand my garden at our old house, now I'm thinking more about going low-maintenance with the plants. We inherited a lot of garden space when we moved to this house a few years ago. I only have five roses, though, and we put those in. But they aren't doing that well. We don't get a log of full sun anywhere. Perhaps I should put them in containers on my deck. I'm just not sure how they would winter over there. Do you spray yours with insecticide?

    1. I'm using the "smothering with black bin bag" technique on the grass.
I'm trying to be as green as I can. I've got rid of the aphids with dishwashing detergent+water but now I have little green caterpillars and I can't seem to get rid of them. Good luck with your roses.

  3. Beautiful flowers Mara. I also want to get rid of the lawn in my front garden, far too much and too many weeds too, so it looks awful. I need to research your technique of the black bin bag, sounds interesting and cheaper than paying someone to come and dig it out.

  4. Thank you, Sami. I seem to remember reading a post about your garden and loving it. If you starve the grass of oxygen and light, it eventually dies. (Using something heavier than black bin liners would work quicker.) I had a gardener take out some grass but I wasn't impressed with the result.

  5. Thanks Mara, I will do some research and see what are the best alternatives.
