Almond trees are in blossom all over the Algarve!
They decorate the countryside at the end of January/beginning of February, announcing that spring is not far away!
Almonds feature in many yummy desserts and cakes made in this region.
What I didn't know was that Portugal is not on the list of top 10 almond production countries in 2009, according to FAO (source:wikipedia). The USA came first, followed by Spain, Iran, Italy, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria and Greece!
Shouldn't Portugal be doing something to get on that list?

I love almonds, but what I can't understand is that while almond trees are everywhere almonds are so expensive!
ReplyDeleteIt is a bit strange, isn't it? The trees are all over the region, but nobody seems to harvest the almonds.
